A Royal Debut – Thomson Majesty

The wintry weather might be back out in force this week, but here at Thomson we’ve got some news that’ll brighten up your day.

Thomson MajestyWe’re excited to announce that Thomson Cruises is welcoming another cruise ship – Thomson Majesty – into its ranks. She’ll be replacing Thomson Destiny, who’s retiring from the fleet after seven years.

So, what can you expect from the switch? Well, Thomson Majesty is spacious and modern, with cabins decked out in a contemporary style. Thomson Majesty also plays host to five restaurants and the full range of bars and entertainment venues – think stylish piano bars and lounges that bring you the best in entertainment. Another of the ship’s standout features is its spa. With two saunas and seven themed treatment rooms – including a couples’ massage room – it’s the ultimate relaxation zone.

Fraser Ellacott, Managing Director of Thomson Cruises, says: “We’re thrilled to be announcing that Thomson Majesty will be joining our fleet as part of our modernisation plans. Majesty is a fantastic ship with great onboard facilities, more outside cabins, and the same first-rate service you’d expect from Thomson Cruises.”

Thomson Majesty will be taking to the seas on 4th May 2012, when she sets sail from Corfu for the Adriatic Explorer cruise. She’ll then spend the winter in the Canaries, before heading back to the Eastern Mediterranean for summer 2013. Check out the Thomson Cruises website for the full rundown of itineraries.

      Hi Fred,

If you’re travelling in September, you should expect to receive a letter from our Programme Change team towards the end of March. Your letter will explain all the details and if you have any questions, you’ll be able to speak to one of our advisors who’ll be happy to help. ^Rhiannon

Communications is an important issue and it looks like Thomsons have not learned the lessons of the Dream experience. Their customers are obviously concerned what is going to happen to their future cruise experience and yet there appears to be an unwarranted delay in communicating with their customers and ultimate paymasters. How long has this swap been in the planning? Not long by the look of it!

          Hi Steve,

As this change has affected a large volume of people, we’ve had to stagger the letters being sent out depending on departure date. In doing so, we’re still able to provide a high level of service and this should hopefully minimise the call waiting times for customers. But we do appreciate your feedback and this will be sent on to the relevant department. ^Rhiannon

      Hi Angie,

It’s great to hear you enjoyed your time on the Destiny. Thomson Majesty will be in Eastern Med from Corfu this summer and based in the canaries this winter. The Dream will be in the Caribbean. Howver the plans for next summer and winter are not available at the moment. Although nothing is planned for Destiny’s last sail, we’re sure there will be a great atmosphere on board. ^Rhiannon

My Mum was booked to travel on the Destiny in June 2012, but she only found out by chance today that she will now be travelling on the Majesty. She’s supposed to be paying the balance of her holiday at the end of this week and is really quite upset that she’s not had any formal contact from Thomson to let her know about this very big change to her holiday. I would have thought that an email would have been the very least you could have done, followed up by a letter through the post. She will be querying this matter with her travel agent, but I think your customer service has fallen down on this.

Due to the large volume of people affected by the change, we’ve had to stagger the letters being sent out depending on departure date. In doing so, it allows us to still provide a high level of service and hopefully this will minimise the wait times when customers are calling in to the team. As your mum is travelling with us in June, letters for her departure date should be sent out tomorrow. So she should be receiving her letter by the middle of next week.

There is a lot of concern on cruise sites that the traditionally excellent shows will not be on the Majesty but will be replaced with singers alone. Can you confirm or deny because the top quality shows are one of the main reasons we book with Thomsons.

we have been on both the spirit and destiny, proper smirnoff vodka was
included in drinks package.i would hope it will be the same on the majesty,we are a party of six and have spent a lot of money, upgrading to 3 outside cabins on deck five.also barry waller made a good point on
top shows, why are they not on.

      Thanks for your comments.

The drinks package is the same as all our other Thomson ships but the mini bars are chargeable. The entertainment has changed but you can expect the usual high standard that you’re used to receiving onboard. ^Rhiannon

My wife and I hoped to celibrate our 35th wedding anneyversary in August aboard the Destiny. It was a special first time cruise including a cabin with a balcony only to be told by phone from the travel agent that the Majesty has no cabins with balcony`s. Such a disappointment that this has taken so long come to light. This may be a new ship to thomsons but its had a checked history. I`m into the travel agents tomorrow for some truthful information and answers?.

    Hi Rhiannon,

I had already guessed that Thomson Cruises would need to stagger the re-allocation because of the numbers. But the way it has been handled falls along way short of decent customer relations. In my view it would have been better to have planned a mail shot informing customers of the change but with a rider that it would be necessary to stagger the re-allocation of cabins to a given timetable (the mail shot should have been issued to co-incide with the press release). I appreciate that even then some customers will remain disgruntled but probably to a lesser degree. Certainly it is not good news to find out this information from non -Thomson web sites or friends and/or colleagues who are not even booked on the Destiny.

My wife and I have taken at least one Thomson cruise over the last six/seven years (but not this year as yet). We do worry about what Thomson is doing to its reputation with the handling of these issues and hopefully this won’t turn into the same debacle as the Dream. The signs are not good though and the phrase ‘honesty is the best policy’ comes to mind.

I was disappointed that I had to tell the agent today that there was something up with the Destiny part of your site. Having booked a cabin with a balcony to celebrate my 65th plus 43 years of marriage I am obviously dissapointed. We cannot change dates and do not want ot change itinary so are somewhat stuck.
Also looking at the reviews under the previous owner I begin to have some worries about the boat.
THere is also no clear explanation as to how the proposed revised charges are applied.

On Friday 2nd March, I paid the balance of our cruise to your shop in Swansea. When I paid the balance nothing was said about the change of ship.Today I recieved a phone call from them telling me of the change. You must have known before I paid this that you were changing ships. No one buys a ship over night. We are sailing on 18th May, This will only be the second sailing of this ship since the change. Will this be like the Dream???????????????? or the NIGHTMARE as it was called by pasengers. WE paid extra to book the deck and cabin that we wanted, I was told over the phone that the cabin will be of the standard. What about my choice that I paid for?????????????. Tomorow 9th I will have to spend time and petrol to go to your shop to find out what I am getting. Are you going to give any compansation for all the anxiety & problems you are causing???? You have certainly let your existing customers down this will be our third cruise with you (thats if we do not try to cancel ). Perhaps the last as you do not seem to respect your pasengers by not even writing to the with all the Yours Bill Williamsinformation they need.

If this is the same video this is very misleading for people looking at the cabins and layout of the ship. I am sure that this Is at also against the advertising standards??? just received letter detailing changes regarding majesty . I can accept that it all has to be phased but the one thing that concerns me is that I pre booked a cabin to suit our needs but I understand that people who have not already pre booked can still do so before people who have pre booked can sort out their cabins this does not seem fair as we may now have to accept a cabin that is not positioned to suit our needs. Surely no new cabin booking should be allowed until all existing pre cabin bookings are satisfied.

Once existing customers receive their revised invoice, they can call our Programme Change team to prebook their cabins. Anyone making a new booking can only prebook their cabins from 2nd April, so the full choice of cabin numbers are available for existing guests.

Is it true the entertainment has took a turn for the worse because the destiny was recommended to us as an ok ship with excellent entertainment aimed at British passengers and not American style entertainment which is on the royal Caribbean ships.this I find is what is most worrying that people have had their ships changed without anyone asking if they would like to cruise on the majesty and then cannot get a refund. If this was a hotel being changed you would refund them would you not.

I cannot believe my eyes. This is such a disappointment. I have been travelling on the Destiny since Thomson acquired it from Airtours, and before then when it was the Airtours Sunbird. It is a fantastic ship, and we’ve never had a bad holiday ever. So much so, we got engaged on the ship last year, and was looking forward to taking the venice itinerary this year for a break after our wedding. This is a special ship – the layout, the crew – it had something the others don’t have, a unique atmosphere and a brilliantly executed Thomson product. Yes, it lacks some of the more modern facilities – but the shows and entertainment were always top notch. I have liased with many other Thomson passengers especially those from the Dream, and the fantastic product on the Destiny is NOT executed on the other ships. E.g. fantastic singing waiters in the Seven Seas Restaurant. Going to Louis’ fleet means that I will never be able to do an English based cruise on it ever again, and don’t even try and sell me the fact the the same great Thomson product will be on the other ships. Louis should have taken the Spirit or the Celebration. Another company should charter the new “olympia” quickly………..

Booked a deluxe cabin for three senior adults on Destiny for 31 August 2012 – paid extra for this as there was a double bed & sofa bed with living area. Got a phone call from the travel agent and told we will be allocated a cabin on the Majesty with two single beds and bunk beds!! Also that we have to wait until a letter comes from Thomson, and that if we cancel we will lose our deposit of over £500.00. This is outrageous as the cabin being offered is totally unsuitable for us. What are our options?

We have just been informed of the change of ship for our honeymoon in August this year. We upgraded our room on the destiny from an inside 2/3 to an inside 4/5. Will we get a similar upgrade on the majesty – by similar I presume a deck 6-8 inside would be equivalent? We also paid for the honeymoon package which included a table reserved for two for the show on the gala night. This bit of the package has now been removed from your website – will we still get what we paid for? Finally, we are becoming increasingly worried that no west end style shows are advertised on your website for the majesty, while they are for all the other ships. Have these shows been removed from the cruise experience on the Majesty?

    Thanks

      Hi Geraint,

We’ve been looking into this for you to find out more details about the gala night and I can confirm you will still get this. And you’ll also receive your honeymoon package which includes a bottle of Moet, fresh flowers and chocolates in your cabin on arrival and a dinner reservation for two. Our entertainment has changed on board but you can still expect the usual high standards of performances. You’ll be able to enjoy everything from personality pianists, cabaret and comedy. And instead of having a regular show team, there’ll be a resident troop of close-harmony vocalists called the Majesty Singers to keep you entertained.

If you do have any further questions, our team will be able to help on 0800 0093893.

Just heard from our travel agent today and we are not at all worried about the change. As it is our first cruise we don’t have any previous experience to compare to and a more updated ship seems like a good deal for us. My only concern is the shows as someone else mentioned. My 13 yr old daughter, who is an avid performer, is really looking forward to the high quality shows (she watched ‘Showboaters’!) and I hope these will still be a feature. Can we be reassured?

A resident troop of close harmony vocalists?
WHY MESS UP A GOOD THING? I have travelled on Cunard, P&O, Costa, Royal Caribbean and the quality of the showteam on Thomson Destiny far exceeds ANY of the showteams on the other cruise lines. Why make this change and take a risk. (E.g. P&O have learned to retain their Headliners Theatre Company – year 1 on Ventura had a different troop and it was really only half as good). If you have talked to some of your more loyal consumers, they will tell you that the quality of the broadway style shows are a key reason that they travel on Thomson Cruises, and particularly the Thomson Destiny. I would be interested to understand if some market research has actually been done here. Does the Thomson Majesty have a proper lounge with a stage to host a Broadway style show, as the Thomson Destiny did with the Can Can Lounge? I would be interested to understand this and also the REAL reason why the Destiny has left the Thomson fleet, and will it EVER be coming back?

We have cruised on Thomson Dream, Thomson Celebration, Island Escape and Thomson Destiny and we booked to sail on the Thomson Destiny again to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary on the 6th October 2012. We are bringing 16 people with us so I do hope that we will be spared the problems we experienced on Thomson Dream. We’ve also paid extra for 2 larger cabins on upper deck 6 at the front of the ship for myself, my husband, my daughter and son-in-law and I will be so disappointed if we are not allocated the equivalent of these cabins.
