Behind The Scenes With a Weddings Manager

As a weddings manager at Thomson, I get to spend my summers helping couples tie the knot in Cyprus. I have a team of 10 wedding advisors and it’s their job to make sure everything runs smoothly on the couples Big Day, and to meet any of the couples’ requests – no matter how big or small!

The couples

The most memorable weddings are when a couple have a story to tell. Maybe couples who’ve been childhood sweethearts, but due to mortgages and children have put off marrying for a few years. Or where a couple dated years ago, lost touch, then fate brought them back together. It’s exciting when a couple come out and their family and friends think they have just gone on holiday, only to get a call after the wedding to announce they have just got married!

Most couples have been planning their wedding for well over a year and invite many friends and family over for the wedding. They generally stay in the same hotel or nearby, but some couples like to have their wedding hotel to themselves, so other wedding guests may have to find accommodation close by. This is no problem though, as we offer so many different products in Cyprus from All Inclusive, Couples, Gold etc.

The best bits

The best thing about getting married in Cyprus is that you only have to be resident for just 3 days – in many other places it’s a week! The legal paperwork is a doddle, a simple document from a solicitor in the UK stating you are single and free to marry means you’ll be pronounced Mr & Mrs in no time!

My favourite wedding spot in Cyprus has to be the east coast, and in particular the resorts of Protaras and Ayia Napa. I love the beaches of Nissi and Fig Tree Bay, but that’s not the only reason. So many people still think of Ayia Napa as a youth destination, but it’s not, it has some great hotels with stunning wedding locations and the resort is very family friendly with chic restaurants and bars.

Cyprus generally has a good temperature, even in the winter months. March sees temperatures going into the low 20’s during the day and creeping well into the high 30’s as we hit August. This makes the most the popular months to tie the knot May – June and Sept – Oct.

The big day

It’s the couples’ day so we try where possible to meet even the strangest requests. Unfortunately we struggled when a bride wanted to arrive on horseback to a hotel ceremony!

On the day the advisor will be at the couple’s hotel an hour before the wedding, taking the bouquets to the bride’s room and checking she is OK. Then, it’s off to catch up with the groom and other guests – generally found at the bar! Time to pin on buttonholes and corsages, check the best man has the rings and then, around 20 minutes before the ceremony, escort the groom and party to the ceremony. Once we’ve made sure everyone knows where they need to be, and wished the groom luck, it’s off to collect the bride.

Following the ceremony and confetti throwing, it’s time for the photos. Group pictures are taken first and then the newlyweds are whisked off for a few romantic shots. Then it’s time to cut the cake! Toasts are made and the advisor wishes them well and leaves them to get the party started!

Hi Clare, Are you looking for pictures of the venue in general or weddings that have taken place? We do have pictures of the venue on our website, and we have 2 gazebo photos which we can send you. However, we don’t have any photos of any weddings taking place which we’d be able to send over.

Hi I was after some pictures of the venue setup for a wedding, I’ve also been looking at st.pauls bay Rhodes do u know of any fun family hotels in the area with water slide’s etc for children? Or can you recommend a hotel. Thanks

Hi Clare, If you contact our Weddings team, they’ll be able to send you some photos of the venue at St Paul’s Bay. You can contact them on 0871 664 0131. The nearest family resort hotels are in Kolymbia, which is approx 30-40 minutes drive away from St Paul’s Bay. The Atlantica Aegean Blue is a Thomson Family Resort hotel in Kolymbia which has an onsite waterpark.

Hello, I just read this blog and I’m absolutely in love with the thought of being in a team like this! I’m looking for summer jobs currently as I start university in September. As a result of where I’d like to go in my career (events manager) I’m looking for as many opportunities for experience as possible. I was wondering if there was any way that perhaps I could be part of this sort of team for a few weeks over the summer and if Thomson offers any summer/apprentice jobs like this to students. Thanks, Lara

Hi we are intending to go to a wedding at the Sensatori in Cyprus but have had different responses to what we will have to pay to go into the hotel as we are staying in another Thomson hotel in Cyprus, can you help. We have been told it’s €75 per adult or €15 per hour, we do not intend to drink much as we have children with us

Hi Jane, You will need to check this with the Bride and Groom as they will be provided with the correct prices. ^Gemma
