DJ Maya Jama Talks Style And Shopping In Thailand

Rinse FM DJ Maya Jama gives us the lowdown her Thailand trip…

To celebrate the launch of Scene, we’ve teamed up with fashion giant ASOS to film in some of our most sought-after destinations. The star of the first video? MTV presenter and Rinse FM DJ, Maya Jama. We whisked Maya off to Thailand with a couple of stylists and a suitcase packed with the latest summer trends. Back on home turf, we grabbed her to talk sunshine, style and shopping sprees…

What’s been the most memorable moment of your career so far?
That would have to be my month-long trip to Brazil. I was there in the run-up to the World Cup and interviewed lots of football players. I only found out I was going a week before so I dropped everything to go but it was so worth it. I loved the place so much I felt like I’d lost a part of me when I came back!

You recently went to Thailand with Scene and ASOS. How was it?
Thailand was just as amazing as Brazil but a completely different experience. My time there was really relaxing and girly, whereas my time in Brazil was all about beer and football.

What was your favourite thing to do while you were in Thailand?
Meeting elephants was amazing. It was great to get up close with them and be able to stroke one.

What fashion look should we rock if we’re heading to Thailand?
Denim or vintage shorts are good because it gets so hot. Make sure you’ve got some wrap-around sandals, too, for when you’re exploring the area. The last thing you want to do is lose a flip flop when you’re trekking up a mountain…

And what country would you love to visit next?
I’d like to go somewhere like Morocco or Egypt. I’d love to see the pyramids one day.

What do you look forward to the most about going on holiday?
Lying on the beach in the sun with an amazing view. Getting a good tan is important, too.

Speaking of good views, what’s the best viewpoint you’ve ever been to?
There’s an amazing view from the Big Buddha at the top of the mountain in Phuket. You can see for miles. I’ve also been to Christ The Redeemer in Rio De Janeiro. That was incredible.

What’s a holiday memory that makes you smile?
Just waking up and remembering you’re on holiday is the best feeling. In Thailand, we stayed at the B-Lay Tong Hotel in Phuket, which was right on the beach. You can’t beat waking up to a beautiful beach like that.

If you could only go on holiday to one place for the rest of your life, where would you choose?
South America. There’s so much to see there that I’d never get bored. Even if I went every year I don’t think I’d ever be able to see it all.

Which celeb has the best summer style?
Rihanna’s always on holiday and always looks amazing. She definitely wins when it comes to outfits. I want her stylist.

Which social media sites do you share your holiday snaps on?
Instagram’s my favourite. I like going on there to look for other people’s holiday pics, too.

What are your packing essentials?
Suncream is top of the list. I’ve been burned really badly before and it can ruin a holiday. You also need a good book, and an outfit to fall back on for a night out – like a classic little black dress.

Do you go on a shopping spree before you jet off?
It’s always exciting getting new outfits before a holiday – it’s better for the photos! I tend to buy a few new pairs of shorts, tops and sarongs before I go away.

What are your favourite fashion trends for this spring/summer?
The crochet look is in right now. And I like the cowboy-esque trend, too. Things like suede, waistcoats and tassels.

Would like to book extra leg room seats for on our outbound journey on a Thomson flight (holiday booked through Thomas Cook online). But have been told we can only do this 3 days before our flight! Is this correct?
